In 2001, CAT and Immunex (which was acquired by Amgen in 2001) (http://www.amgen.com) entered into a collaboration that focused on the joint discovery, development and commercialisation of human monoclonal antibody therapeutics to treat autoimmune and inflammatory disorders. Under the terms of the collaboration, the costs of research and development were shared equally with any profits from future product sales split on a 50:50 basis.
In 2003, the terms of the collaboration were restructured and Amgen took responsibility for the further development and product commercialisation of two human monoclonal antibody drug candidates isolated by CAT. CAT has received fees and milestone payments for both programmes and will receive further milestone during the course of development and royalties on future sales. These antibodies are now in early stage development at Amgen.
In addition, CAT granted Amgen a multi-site library licence option with ongoing expert support from the technology transfer team and associated product development options in return for potential fees, milestone and royalty payments on product sales. Amgen is now actively using CAT's antibody libraries at more than one site for human monoclonal antibody discovery across a range of therapeutic areas.
