Genzyme

In 2000, CAT and Genzyme (http://www.genzyme.com) commenced a broad strategic alliance to develop and commercialise human monoclonal antibody therapeutics directed against TGFβ. GC-1008, a human monoclonal antibody discovered by the alliance has entered a Phase I clinical trial in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and may be undertaken in other chronic fibrotic conditions. Trials in oncology are also planned and an IND has been granted.

Under the terms of the alliance, Genzyme received an exclusive worldwide licence to CAT's human monoclonal antibodies directed against all uses of TGFβ except ophthalmology. In addition, Genzyme received a non-exclusive worldwide licence from CAT for non-antibody antagonists of TGFβ in exchange for milestone and royalty payments on products that are successfully developed.

The research, development and commercialisation activities of the alliance are funded jointly and CAT and Genzyme will share the profits that result. Genzyme will manage the clinical and regulatory development of products developed by the alliance and will also be responsible for worldwide marketing and sales.

In 2004, CAT and Genzyme entered into a separate library licence agreement. CAT provided its antibody libraries and ongoing expert support from the technology transfer team to Genzyme in return for an upfront licence fee. MedImmune will receive milestone payments during the course of development and royalty payments based on the sales of products arising from this agreement.
