CAT-354 is a human anti-IL-13 monoclonal antibody being developed by MedImmune, initially as a potential treatment for severe asthma. IL-13 is a cytokine that has potent immunomodulatory effects and is believed to be a highly relevant target for treating asthma as a result of its potential role in airways obstruction, acute exacerbations and in chronic airways remodelling. A Phase I double-blind, placebo-controlled, single dose, dose escalating, intravenous trial of CAT-354 in 34 patients was initiated in 2004. Results demonstrated that CAT-354 was well tolerated at all doses, no safety concerns were identified and pharmacokinetics were as anticipated. In late 2006, a further Phase I clinical trial was initiated. This is a repeat-dose study in patients with mild/moderate asthma. Three different doses of CAT-354 will be given every 28 days and will be compared with placebo. A total of 30 patients are expected to complete the study. The trial will study safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetics. To find out more about severe asthma, please click on the link below: |
